The Basics: Two Types of Hardwood Planks

As you begin shopping for your new floors, gathering information is important. One of the ways that we provide excellent customer service is by answering questions that homeowners may have. Customers can contact our experts by phone or e-mail, or simply read the information that we provide online. Our floor experts are here to give you a crash course in hardwood flooring and offer suggestions when you need them most! Hardwood flooring is generally sold in two forms: engineered wood planks, and solid wood planks. Knowing the difference between the two types can help you figure out which would work best for your home improvement project. Here are the basics:
  • Solid wood flooring planks have no layers-- they are entirely solid. This makes them particularly durable. They can be sanded and refinished quite a few times, which makes them long-lasting. Any time that the floors appear dull, they can be refinished or polished to bring back their old shine. Homeowners should note that solid wood is not appropriate for damp spaces (such as basements) and that shifting and swelling may occur in humid environments. It is also important to let solid wood planks adjust to moisture levels in the rooms where they will be installed for proper placement. This flooring should be installed at or above grade, but never below grade.

  • Engineered wood is made by combining different layers of thin strips of hardwood and binding them with glue. Then the plank is pressed together using high heat and pressure. The result is a highly durable floor covering that can withstand most common wear factors in the home. Engineered hardwood can be installed above, at, or below grade. It is also more resistant to moisture. This makes it a desirable choice for basement rooms or areas with higher humidity. Note that engineered wood cannot be sanded and refinished as many times as solid wood and may have to be replaced sooner for aesthetic purposes.

A Few Helpful Tips

If you decide to purchase and install hardwood flooring for your household, here are a few helpful tips:
  • Know the terms of your warranty. You should always abide by the terms of your warranty to get the most use and the best deal out of your hardwood floors. Our professional staff will be glad to help you contact the manufacturer for more information.

  • Ask about proper maintenance. We can provide some information on how to care for your new floors and make them last as long as possible. Simply contact your manufacturer or speak with one of our showroom experts.

  • Consider extra services. Services like furniture removal, floor disposal, in-home measurement, and others can rack up costs beyond your budget if they aren’t factored in from the get-go. Remember to speak with one of our consultants to make sure that you are prepared prior to installation!
